Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

Consider this a test for partners in committed relationships who appreciate horror films: Get comfortable with your loved one and watch Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like standard body horror, but beneath Together lies a deep meditation about our choices in loving our partners.

A Directorial Debut Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have been together for ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, the actors contribute a unique chemistry to their characters, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The narrative commences when the couple relocate from the urban environment to the rural area for her career. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, sure, but that’s mostly where the cliches end. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence begins influencing the couple. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The entire film is a slow burn of scares, interspersing bits of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and presents them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and removed from his social circle. He dreads the idea of totally forfeiting his individual identity in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie never makes one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie face the type of challenges that are inherent in long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they still love one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these fears of codependency and fully committing to another person, the symbolism never feels clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion plant anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your other half and state, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can undertake today.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu now.
